The Black Church and the Offices of Pastor and Deacon
If the Black Church Received A Grade On Its Understanding and Use of the Offices of Pastor and Deacon, What Would the Report Card Look Like?
The Rock was a larger than life figure when he wrestled in the WWE. His iconic tagline matched the brashness and confidence of his in-ring persona; KNOW YOUR ROLE!
The phrase “know your role” is a call for individuals to understand their organizational position, expectations and responsibilities. It expresses the importance of being aware of the various functions and “lanes” within a team. As you consider the Black Church’s evolution since the 20th century, how well would you say pastors and deacons generally know their role(s)?
There are far too many stories of deacons that serve as barriers rather than partners to the pastoral ministry. Some deacon boards view the pastoral office as nothing more than a preaching job, and the pastor as a mere employee.
Conversely, there are pastors that attempt to reign as kings rather than labor as servants. In some segments of the Black Church, “honor culture” has placed the pastor above critique, rebuke, and accountability. Is it too late to level-set?
