Black Pastors Discuss the Legacy of John MacArthur
I SEE THAT BOILING POT OF HOT WATER, AND I GUESS I’M ABOUT TO JUMP RIGHT IN IT…
There is one word that completely sums up internal feelings of ambivalence, disinterest and indifference. This one word can draw the ire and rebuke from those passionate about the subject related to the usage of this word. When this word is strategically placed, it can curtail further dialogue and dampen passionate rhetoric. This one word is…
“MEH”
“MEH” is a colloquial expression used to indicate feelings of apathy, and detachment. “MEH” is the verbal equivalent of a shrug of the shoulders. Admittedly, on July 14th 2025, when I first heard of the passing of Dr. John MacArthur, my first response was, “MEH.”
It wasn’t my response because I’m callous toward the emotions of those grieving. It wasn’t my response because I take joy in expressing indifference when a beloved figure dies. It wasn’t even my response to the fact that he passed away. When Pastor John MacArthur died, I immediately thought about his legacy.
- I thought about the commentaries and sermons I’ve personally gleaned from.
- I thought about the rigid stance he took against those that affirmed the charismatic gifts.
- I thought about the viral Q&As he participated in where he offered valuable insight.
- I thought about him anathematizing thousands of professing Christians simply because they don’t vote like him.
- I thought about some of the capable and effective pastors that have been trained at Master’s Seminary.
- I thought about the hurtful rhetoric and unbiblical stance he took on Social Justice.
- I thought about the fact that he never had to step away from ministry because of an aldulterous or financial scandal.
- I thought about the abuse cover-up at his church, that still seems to be shrouded in mystery and ambiguity.
- I thought about his embrace of Black preachers such as Hemsworth Jonas, HB Charles and Conrad Mwebe
- I thought about the horrible things he’s said about race, slavery and the Curse of Ham.
I felt deeply conflicted, and “MEH” was the word I mustered out of my conflicted emotions. Considering Dr. MacArthur’s impact upon the world provoked the response, not his death.
