Black Conservatives Are Wrong About the Black Church AGAIN!

I’ve discovered that many people that aren’t aligned with the general politics of the Black Church, demonize the Black Church the Most.

It’s no secret that members of the Black Church overwhelmingly vote democratic. Allegiance to one party is problematic, yet it’s understandable given the history of the Republican Party since the presidency of democrat Harry S. Truman. Essentially, the Republican Party hasn’t been the party of Lincoln for a LONG time.

In the 20th century, Lee Atwater’s “Southern Strategy” significantly impacted the style of political campaigning, emphasizing personal attacks and emotional appeals over substantive policy discussions. Success in politics became more about who could spew the most vicious barbs and land the most verbal haymakers. This type of approach and rhetoric is often carried over into discussions regarding the Black Church.

I’ve listened as many Black conservatives unfairly malign, misrepresent, caricature, and castigate the Black Church. Their assessments aren’t often informed by history, theology, data and/or charity. They are mostly poorly constructed tirades, underpinned by deep political animus.

Trumpism has made anti-blackness en vogue again. Unaligned Black institutions are often placed in the conservative crosshairs. Black conservatives take aim to shoot people they see as political opponents rather than brothers and sisters.

Recently, conservative Black pastors gathered to discuss the state of the Black Church. I reviewed portions their discussion. Catch the conversation here.
